The Travel Plan agenda is closely linked in with the wider national movement to develop a more sustainable and environmentally friendly society. There is a great deal of overlapping between the work to promote sustainable transport with the work to support social wellbeing and assisting in developing sustainable communities.

Much of this has been been captured by the Good Corporate Citizenship program which has identified a direct line between waste and facilities management, sustainable procurement, capital development and energy management.

This link has been further cemented by the growing recognition of government of the need to address global warming and its associated problems. Key to this new approach is the introduction of effective climate change strategies, which seek to help organisations identify current base levels of carbon emissions and develop strategies to reduce them.
