Active Travel


In the last few years there has been increasing recognition of the positive role active methods of travel (such as walking and cycling), can play in addressing the growing problems' caused by increasingly sedatory lifestyles and rising levels of obesity amongst the population.

With an increase in projects designed to to increase participation in walking and cycling activities, many public health promotional and travel plan initiatives are running along increasingly similar lines increasing potential synergy.

Pioneering projects such as the Healthy Wheels health referral scheme run in the North West have helped to encourage the uptake of active travel projects by Primary Care Trusts, who are looking to target specific patient groups   

Sustrans Active Travel Project      
The Sustran's Active Travel Team have played a key role in promoting the concept of active travel, playing an important role in delivering many public health objectives for local government and the NHS. 

Promoting Physical Activity in the Workplace
In 2007 TfL commissioned a research report looking at the effects of promoting physical activity in the workplace and see if the claim that they helped improve the health of an employers workforce and so by reduced sickness levels.
