The Travel Plan

A Travel Plan is a package of measures designed to manage an organisation's transport activities, with the aim of reducing the number of vehicle trips generated by the the organisation. This is achieved through the promotion of sustainable forms of transport, promoting a greener, cleaner travel option while reducing reliance on the car.

Travel plans can increase travel choices by encouraging the use of public transport, walking, cycling, and the use of low-emission vehicles for commuting to and from work and business travel. Travel Plans help can help organisations' to implement transportation, health and environmental policies. For example this could include reducing the transport component of a Trust's Carbon Footprint, or promoting Active Travel which can form part of a Trust's Obesity Strategy.

Travel plans work by linking to-gether different elements of transport policy and strategy under a general frame work. This results in each element having a greater impact and level of effectiveness than if they were operating on their own. This whole process is backed up by a series of targets, monitoring and reviews which help to analyse how well the plan is proceeding, what is and isn’t working and why. This allows the travel plan to become a living flexible tool, as the analysis can allow changes in focus, resources and initiatives which will aim to make the plan more successful.

Local planning authorities are increasingly looking to use travel plans in the planning process to negate the negative environmental impact of new developments.
