Cycle2Work Scheme

The Government’s “Cycle2Work” scheme is proving to be one of the most dynamic travel plan initiatives introduced since travel planning became mainstream around ten years ago. The scheme offers staff the opportunity to purchase new bicycles and equipment through their employers and take advantage of tax discounts of on average between 30% and 40%.
For organisations looking to promote cycling to their staff as part of a travel plan or a more general environmental promotion, the scheme offers the opportunity to provide a very real benefit to their employees at a relatively small cost.
The NHS has been in the forefront of adopting the Cycle2Work scheme with over 44 Trusts running the scheme by the summer of 2007. As a result this positive work the NHS London Travel Plan Network has commission a report by the London Cycling Campaign to assess how Trusts’ have implemented the scheme. Based on the pioneer work by the NHS, facilitating companies and associated cycle retailers, the aim of the guide is to assist Cycle2Work in becoming a standard benefit offered by all Trusts to their staff.
Drawing on lessons learnt the guide seeks complement existing Department Transport guidance whilst offering impartial advice which will save interested organisations hours of staff time in researching and developing their own Cycle2Work project.
